Barcelona, the judges cancel curfew. “Unsanitary reasons”
The Catalan Superior Court of Justice requires the city of Barcelona to terminate the curfew with immediate effect. The sentence of the highest court of Catalonia is very harsh. For the judges, the reasons for the decision are to be ascribed “not to an emergency health situation, but only to reasons of public order” The same provision will affect dozens of other locations in the north-east of Spain: the Catalan court approved the curfew only in 19 of the 148 municipalities that the Government of the Generalitat had included in Covid’s request for extension of restrictions.
The curfew remained in effect between 1 am and 6 am for several weeks in more than 100 municipalities in Catalonia, one of the areas most affected by the wave of summer infections caused mainly by the Delta variant of the coronavirus. Given the improvement in the health situation, the regional government lowered the incidence threshold considered sufficient to justify its extension and obtain the corresponding judicial permits.
