Brazilian soccer player Dani Alves will face trial in the case of alleged sexual assault against a woman in a nightclub last year, the Spanish court confirmed to international media this day.

Perspective Writing

The Barcelona Court indicated that “there is sufficient evidence to hold a trial” considering the statements given to the court and the evidence presented in the investigation phase. A hearing date has yet to be determined.

Alves, 40, has been in pretrial detention since January, when he was arrested for allegedly assaulting a woman in a Barcelona nightclub on December 30. He was indicted by an investigating judge in August.

The former Barcelona defender has denied any crime and assured that he had a consensual sexual relationship with the accuser.

Under Spain’s consent laws, passed last year, sexual assault charges include various crimes, from online abuse to touching, all with varying levels of punishment. A rape case can carry a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.

Alves won 42 titles, including the Champions League three times with Barcelona and the Copa América twice with Brazil. He played in his third World Cup last year in Qatar.

A judge ordered him to remain in prison in January after analyzing the initial investigation by the authorities and listening to the testimonies of the alleged victim, witnesses and the player himself.

All requests for bail were denied to Alves because the court considered him to be a flight risk. The player offered to hand over his passport and carry a tracker while he awaits the court’s decision. Alves’ lawyers did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
