Barcelona has decided to sign a new goalkeeper during the current season to support its ranks, after the severe injury suffered by the German Marc-Andre ter Stegen, the Catalan team’s goalkeeper.
Mercato expert Fabrizio Romano wrote on his account on the “X” network: “The transfer deal for Wojciech Szczesny to Barcelona has been decided, as it was agreed that the Polish goalkeeper will join Barca as a free player.”
He added, “Szczesny will come out of retirement to sign with Barcelona, and replace Ter Stegen with a one-year contract.”
He concluded, “Szczesny will undergo a medical examination in Spain in the coming days.”
Szczesny (34 years old) announced his retirement from football, after participating with Poland in the recent Euro 2024 tournament.
Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen injured his knee during the Villarreal match last Sunday, after rising to catch the ball, as he fell incorrectly on his knee.
Barcelona said in an official statement: “Mark ter Stegen suffers from a complete rupture of the patellar tendon in his right knee,” and press reports indicate that he may miss the rest of the current season.
