After an impressive “7 out of 7” start to this year’s La Liga, Barcelona suffered their first defeat on Saturday night, with the strong home team Osasuna triumphing 4-2 over the Blaugrana in the 8th matchday.

Barcelona traveled to Pamplona buoyed by their impressive streak of seven victories in as many opening games, but in their clash with Osasuna on the 8th matchday, home ground proved decisive.

Vicente Moreno’s team had won their first three home games at “El Sadar” (against Mallorca, Celta, and Las Palmas) and the same scenario repeated itself on Saturday night, with the Pamplona team clearly superior to the Blaugrana from start to finish, earning a deserved 4-2 victory.

From the very first half-hour, they took the lead, going ahead by two goals with Budimir (18′) and Zaharyota (28′), with the first half ending with the hosts at 1.14 xgoals and Barcelona with the weak 0.05 (since 2010-11, they have only had one match with a lower number, 0.01 against Eibar in May 2021).

In the 53rd minute, the Blaugrana were back in contention with Victor’s goal, and shortly after, Hansi Flick brought on Yamal and Rafinha, but Osasuna remained unflustered and countered, reaching 4-1 with Budimir’s accurate penalty (72′) and an unstoppable shot from outside the box by Bretones (85′).

All the Catalans could manage was to score a second goal just before the end with Yamal (89′), with the referee’s final whistle finding Osasuna celebrating a well-deserved victory over the leaders, boasting an impressive 2.35 xgoals compared to just 0.59 from their opponent.

It is noted that this was the third time Osasuna scored at least 4 goals against Barcelona in any competition after the 4-2 in 1936 for the Spanish Super Cup and the 4-2 in 1984 for the league.
