The result of the Monthly Services Survey for January, released by the IBGE this Friday (14), confirms the trend in Abrasel’s surveys among bar and restaurant entrepreneurs, with worse numbers in the results of companies at the beginning of the year compared to the end of 2022 .

Despite the 0.7% increase in the volume of services in Accommodation and Food (a segment in which food away from home represents 84% of companies, according to Revenue data), there was a cooling in relation to December, when the volume increased by 2.8% in the sector.

The country’s general average recorded the biggest drop in the historical series of the indicator, with -3.1% (the numbers are calculated since 2012). In terms of nominal revenue, growth in the sector was 0.3%, against a rise of 0.4% in December. But also a more expressive increase than the average, of 0.1% in the same period.

Abrasel surveys show that the results of companies have also worsened at the beginning of the year, with 30% realizing losses in February (they were 23% in January and 19% in December) and another 36% in balance, without managing to make a profit.

“The drop in services in general was big, with -3.1% in January. In our sector there was an increase of 0.7%, this is the glass half full, as it shows that despite all the difficulties we are resilient and are contributing positively in an expressive way to the result. What happens is that high inflation, unfortunately, harms the results, leading most companies to work without profit”, explains the executive president of Abrasel, Paulo Solmucci.

In the accumulated 12 months, the segment has almost triple the increase in the volume of services in relation to the general average, with a growth of 23% in accommodation and food, against 8% in the average of all services. In the comparison between January 2023 and January 2022, the difference is smaller: 11.2% in food, against 6.1% of the general average.

′′ Our most expressive growth took place after March 2022, when restrictions on the operation of bars and restaurants began to fall due to the pandemic. But this growth still brings with it the legacy of the most difficult times, which means that today almost a third of our sector is working at a loss, while many are struggling to pay bills and borrow money to survive. In this context, it is urgent that help come, in the form of inclusion of programs such as Perse, so that companies in the region can reorganize themselves and keep their doors open and the jobs that are generated by the sector”, completes Solmucci.
