Blessed be the truth. At the age of 97, Yaakov Zilberstein, a Holocaust survivor who had been imprisoned in the extermination camps for 6 years, immigrated to Israel and was a key activist in Zionist organizations.

Yaakov Zvi Zilberstein was born in 1924 in Poland and studied at the Yeshiva of the Sages of Lublin. When Poland was occupied by Germany, his family was sent to the ghetto, and in November 1942 the family was deported to Auschwitz, where Jacob’s parents and three brothers perished. Jacob, who was 15, was sent to the Buchenwald camp in 1939 and in 1942 was transferred to Auschwitz.

In January 1945, with the evacuation of the Auschwitz camp, he took part in the death marches to Germany, and in the Czech Republic he managed to escape with three other members. They found refuge in the attic of a local gentile’s house until the liberation.

In 1958, Zilberstein immigrated to Israel, and was active in Zionist organizations and Holocaust memorial organizations. he He worked for the Jewish Agency, Keren Hayesod and the Histadrut Hapoel Mizrahi. His funeral took place at noon.
