Joe Kelly, one of the flagship players of the Los Angeles Dodgers MLB franchise, obviously won’t hold a grudge against Shohei Ohtani. The Japanese baseball star, teammate of Kelly, has only perpetuated a tradition of the MLB, the American league: offering a gift to the partner who leaves you his number. But Ohtani recovered the 17 from Kelly, who now displays the 99 on his outfit.
Shohei Ohtani obviously did so with good grace but above all innovated by choosing to offer a gift to… the wife of his new teammate. For what ? Because the latter had been very active on social networks to push Ohtani to sign with the Los Angeles Dodgers, her husband’s club.

The 29-year-old Japanese made Ms. Kelly’s wish come true after a long negotiation which resulted in a record 10-year contract worth $700 million while the former Los Angeles Angels player, at the end of his contract, had the MLS world at his feet. Everyone was eager for this player, who arrived in MLS in 2018, as good as a pitcher as a batsman, a rarity in this sport.
It’s unclear if the support from Joe Kelly’s wife influenced Ohtani to sign with the other Los Angeles club, but it visibly affected MLS’ best player in 2021 and 2023. In a video posted to Instagram, we thus sees Joe Kelly’s wife open the front door of her house to a delivery man, who tells her that the silver car parked in front of her house, a splendid Porche, is now hers. Before specifying that it was offered to him by Shohei Ohtani, grateful for his support on social networks.
