Basic food basket in Argentina increased by 76.1% in the first half of 2024

GOOD AIRESThe price of the basic basket of goods in Argentina, an indicator used to measure the poverty threshold, increased by 275.7 percent year-on-year in June and in the first half of the year it accumulated an increase of 76.1 percent, according to a report on Friday by the National Institute of Statistics and Census (INDEC).

The state entity also reported that the food basket, used to measure the level of poverty, increased by 277.4 percent year-on-year and accumulated a rise of 63.4 percent in the first six months of the year.

In this way, a family of four members required an income of 873,169 pesos (947 dollars according to the official exchange rate) per month to not fall below the poverty line, while the same family group needed 393,319 pesos (427 dollars) to not fall below the extreme poverty line, according to INDEC.

In June, an individual’s monthly income had to total 282,578 pesos (about 307 dollars) to avoid being considered poor and 127,287 pesos (138 dollars) to avoid being indigent, the state agency added.

The increases recorded by basic and food baskets in Argentina in the first half of the year were below the inflation rate, which stood at 79.8 percent in the same period.

In Argentina, poverty affects approximately 41.7 percent of the population, according to data collected at the end of 2023, all of which corresponds to 31.8 percent of households.

In addition, 11.9 percent of the population would be below the poverty line, which is equivalent to some 870,000 households and 3.5 million people.
