If you are looking to escape the crowds and heat, September is a fantastic month to go on vacation. And if it is in a camper, the advantages are many. You just have to keep in mind a series of basic rules to avoid any setbacks.

For example, firstly, campers have two batteries, one for the ‘housing’ and one for the engine. The power outlets are 12 volts – enough to charge the phone with USB outlets – but if a conventional plug is required, it is necessary to connect it to the mains or start the engine.

Camping outside designated areas, such as campsites, can lead to a serious penalty – on the beach, for example, amounts to 1,500 euros-. However, more and more rural houses have the camper public in mind and are setting up spaces on their properties, with electricity outlets and access to bathrooms.

The authorities have little tolerance for waste, both solid and liquid, and you can only dispose of it in certain areas: in a campsite or in some motorway service areas. The fine for deliberately pouring them can amount to up to 3,000 euros.

Although you must always proceed with common sense, it is worth knowing that removing chairs or awnings in non-permitted areas can result in a light fine (up to 750 euros), while damaging street furniture or obstructing traffic can reach 3,000.

The document necessary to travel outside of Spain is the European Health Card. The insurance contact number from abroad must also be saved. In addition, it is important to find out about the toll rates/dignette obligation of the country to be visited, as well as emission zones.

You do not need a special driving license to travel. Most campers and motorhomes weigh less than 3,500 kilos, so they can be driven with a B, tourist license. If they exceed this category, you do need the B96 or the B+E -depending on the weight-, or the C1.
