Libreville, August 6, 2024 (AGP) – The president of the Gabonese Basketball Federation (Fegabab), Willy Conrad Asseko, hopes for support from the authority, in order to allow the national team to make a good showing during the qualifiers for the next Afrobasket.
AGP: What is your assessment at the end of the last edition of the National Championship marked by the respective victories of Gladiators and Relais?
Willy Conrad Asseko : The National Amateur Championship called Youzou Elite Basketball 2024 edition started on December 29th. It ended recently and we witnessed two great matches. This is an opportunity for me to reiterate my thanks to all the participating clubs and my sincere congratulations to the Relais and Gladiators teams. However, before taking stock, I would like to point out that, for the organization of the competition, we have opted for a participatory model for the clubs and have set up specifications. In our specifications, the participation fees amount to 500,000 FCFA for men’s clubs and 200,000 FCFA for women. The participation fees help support the organization of the competition, including full insurance for participants, payment of referees, communication, local and foreign training for participants, and miscellaneous expenses. The funds raised from sponsors allow us to build up the prize pools that we give to the winning teams. The Federation also offered balls and jerseys to all the participating teams. On the sporting front, this is the second edition and we were once again able to increase the volume of play for our young people. On the financial front, we were able to rely on the Gabonese private sector… FEGABAB did not benefit from the support of the supervisory authority for this edition, but I am taking advantage of this opportunity to request the support of the Ministry of Sports for the next edition of the 2024-2025 National Amateur Basketball Championship.
Where are you with the Gabon national team, regarding its participation in the next AFROBASKET 2025 qualifiers? ?
The National Technical Directorate (DTN) is hard at work, and we have been submitting our preparation program to the supervisory authority for several months now. We are waiting for arrangements to be made for Gabon’s honorable participation in the qualifiers scheduled for November 2024 and February 2025. I would like to remind you that Gabon is in the same group as Cameroon, Senegal and Rwanda.
What is planned at the Federation level so that Gabon can do well during this competition?
The preparation of the Panthers of Gabon will take place in 3 major phases: a local pre-selection, a local regrouping and the greening. I wanted to clarify that in addition to the players who participate in local federal competitions, we must necessarily strengthen our team with Gabonese players playing abroad (USA, Israel, Finland, France, etc.). In this sense, we have requested the support of the Ministry of Sports to finalize the detection started by the National Technical Directorate several months ago, and we are still waiting for a positive response from the Ministry of Sports.
