Basque cooperatives employ 54,000 people, 6% of the total in Euskadi

The Basque Country has 1,856 cooperative companies that employ more than 54,000 people, which is equivalent to 5.9% of total employment in the Basque Country. Its net sales were over 8,000 million in 2021, according to Eustat. The weight of Gipuzkoa in terms of employment stands out, since it hosts 53.9% of the total, followed by Bizkaia with 36.6% and Álava with 9.5%. However, in terms of the distribution of establishments by territory, Bizkaia concentrates 43.4%, Gipuzkoa 42.4% and Alava 14.2%.U

The associations that celebrate today in Donostia the International Day of Cooperatives. The day, entitled ‘Cooperatives for Sustainable Development’, coincides with the Spanish capital of the Social Economy. The event will involve leaders of cooperatives worldwide as well as institutional representatives. Among the first are Wenyan Yang, president of the United Nations Committee for the Promotion of Cooperatives, and Ariel Guarco, president of the ICA.
