To combat the growth of crime among labor migrants, it is necessary to improve migration processes, RIA Novosti reported, citing the head of the Investigative Committee of Russia, Alexander Bastrykin.

“The problem of the growing crime of labor migrants also requires a new approach. These are mainly young people from the Central Asian republics, who often become the targets of such recruitment, ”Bastrykin said.

He cited as an example a native of one of the countries of Central Asia, who was detained in March 2021 for preparing an explosion in one of the shopping centers in Maikop. The detainee was found with components of a homemade bomb with striking elements, instructions for its manufacture, symbols of the Islamic State terrorist group banned in Russia, and forged migration documents.

Bastrykin announced the need to improve migration legislation in early November last year. In particular, he referred to the increase in crime among migrants: in the first half of 2021, law enforcement agencies investigated almost 19,000 crimes committed by foreigners, against 17,000 in the same period last year. At the same time, the number of crimes committed by migrants and representing an increased public danger has noticeably increased, according to Bastrykin: crimes classified as extremism have increased by 33%, terrorism – by 26%, murders – by 8%, and rape – by 5%.

Bastrykin instructed to prepare amendments to the legislation to introduce compulsory genomic registration of labor migrants. The department referred to the growth of crime among migrants, including grave and especially grave crimes, which pose an increased social danger.
