Sonni Mason, 25, transformed a Norwich street corner into Gotham City on Saturday, September 19, when he chased down a handbag thief in full Batman attire. The London cafe worker was out celebrating a friend’s birthday when a street argument over a cigarette pack turned into a purse snatching.
Costumed Crusaders and a Nightclub Queue Dispute
What started as a routine birthday celebration outside a Norwich bar on Queen Street took an unexpected turn when a stranger approached the group. The confrontation escalated quickly when the suspect grabbed a woman’s handbag and bolted into the night.
Mason did not hesitate. Dressed as the caped crusader, he took off after the fleeing suspect. He was not running alone; his birthday group included friends dressed as Mister Fantastic, Poison Ivy, and Cyclops, creating an unlikely makeshift league of comic book heroes sprinting through the city streets.
The Chase, the Cathedral Wall, and a Toilet Paper Grappling Hook
During the pursuit, the costumed group flagged down local police officers on routine night-time economy patrols to ask for help. When the pursuers eventually caught up with the suspect, however, he had already ditched the stolen property. A subsequent tip-off directed the group toward Norwich Cathedral, roughly 300 meters from where the robbery took place.
There, the handbag sat atop a high flint perimeter wall. An initial attempt to retrieve it using a makeshift grappling hook fashioned from a recycled toilet roll tube failed. With a physical boost from a friend and permission from the authorities, Mason scaled the barrier to fetch the item.

“On a night out for a friends birthday, someone swiped someone bag over a pack of cigarettes out of spite (he was lying about time stealing from him), myself as Batman, Poison Ivy, Mr Fantastic and various other heroes chased him down. Ivy and Reed caught up with him and couldn’t find the bag on him. Myself and our group along with the help of Police, helped track the bag to the roof of a church. I was assisted to the roof where the bag was recovered. All contents were safe and sound, no one hurt or traumatised. Everyone got home safe.”

Reality Versus the Comic Books
While online commentators watching footage shared on TikTok have pointed out the cinematic nature of the evening, Mason remains grounded about his day-to-day life. He notes that his bank account looks rather different from Wayne Enterprises.

“I’m a bog-standard guy, to be honest. I currently work at a cafe, but I’m a creative at the core. I love films and have four or five years of experience in that industry.”

His viral TikTok post captured the victim jumping for joy as her bag was returned with all its contents intact.
Ethics Rooted in Everyday Kindness
For Mason, the episode carries a straightforward message about looking out for others rather than playing vigilante. He emphasized that his goal was never to engage in street fights or leap dangerously from rooftops.
“I hope I can inspire people to be a little bit more like Batman. Not so much the running around in the dark in a costume but helping others out. I didn’t expect to be scaling up a wall.”

He added that people should feel motivated to step in if they witness someone in distress, regardless of what they are wearing.
“Everyone needs a little bit of Batman. You have to be brave, bold and kind. I would hope everyone else would do the same, whether or not they are wearing a cape or a cowl. I didn’t want to jump off rooftops or beat people up. I just want to make sure everyone else is all right. Sincerely, that’s what [Batman] is about. He’s a protector.”

The Police Response and Unresolved Questions
While the civilian rescue ended happily for the owner of the bag, law enforcement maintained a strictly procedural view of the night’s events. Norfolk Police confirmed that officers assisted with the missing item following a public appeal during routine patrols.

“Officers on routine night-time economy patrols in Norwich were approached by a member of the public, on Saturday, September 19, who requested help to find a missing bag. Following enquiries at the scene, the bag was located with all of its contents intact and subsequently returned to its owner.”

Despite the pursuit through the city center, authorities confirmed that the primary suspect managed to elude capture.
