Millions of culled chickens, countless dead animals in nature and enormous financial damage, including for the taxpayer. Bird flu is back and it doesn’t seem to be going away. As a result, there are hardly any free-range eggs available in the shop. Experts are concerned that the virus will continue to mutate and become dangerous to humans. What challenge are we facing?

Investigative journalist Norbert Reintjens, together with colleague Wilfried Koomen, investigated the years-long battle against bird flu and why that battle has still not been won. The bird flu virus spreads rapidly and leaves a trail of destruction. Six million chickens have been culled since the most recent outbreak of the virus in October 2021.

The virus mutates at lightning speed, which greatly increases the risk for humans. Scientists are concerned about the development of the virus, but solutions are not yet forthcoming. This has everything to do with the interests of the various parties.

Why a solution really needs to be found, you can hear in the Zembla Podcast. It can be heard on all podcast platforms.
