According to the Bavarian Brewers’ Association, the economic pressure on many medium-sized breweries in particular continues to increase. The association’s president therefore believes that beer should be more expensive.

The president of the Bavarian Brewers’ Association is in favor of higher beer prices. In Germany, beer is one of the cheapest in Europe, Georg Schneider told the “Augsburger Allgemeine” (Tuesday). In order to operate sensibly, a case of beer from a medium-sized craft business should cost 25 to 30 euros, according to the brewers’ president.

“My brewers are furious when a case of beer is sold in stores at the ridiculous price of 9.99 euros. That is a slap in the face for us and our work.” This is obviously no longer valued, said Schneider.

Looking at the sales figures so far, the brewer’s president expects a year “just as bad as 2023”. According to the Federal Statistical Office, Bavarian brewers’ sales increased by 1.8 percent to 1.19 billion liters in the first half of the year. In recent years, however, brewers have mostly had to accept declines in sales.

Schneider does not currently see an increasing number of breweries dying out. A lot has to happen before a brewery gives up. “Brewers are very patient, after all they work in a very emotional industry.” Economic considerations often play a subordinate role. “But you can’t survive on losing money in the long term, even if some companies sell land in order to continue to exist.” It is becoming increasingly difficult to run a brewery economically under the problematic conditions.

Schneider cited rising costs, a multitude of regulations and a decreasing beer consumption per capita as reasons.
