Bayern Munich maintained their perfect start to the UEFA Champions League campaign on Tuesday with a 2-0 victory away against Atletico Madrid. Teenage star Lennart Karl and Konrad Laimer scored in the second half to secure the win for the German champions, extending their unbeaten run in the tournament.
Karl redeems difficult start to break deadlock
The breakthrough came nine minutes after the restart. Eighteen-year-old Karl made amends for a difficult first half by nipping in behind Robin Le Normand, snatching the ball from the Atletico defender, and chipping it effortlessly over goalkeeper Jan Oblak.
Laimer doubled the visitors’ advantage shortly after. Harry Kane picked up the midfielder in space, and Laimer blasted a ferocious strike over Oblak and into the roof of the net.
Kane misses chance to match scoring record
Playing in his first European match since winning the Ballon d’Or, Kane had less fortune in front of goal. The England captain missed the opportunity to equal Cristiano Ronaldo’s record for the longest scoring streak in Champions League history. Having scored in his previous 10 appearances in the competition, Kane failed to trouble Oblak, shanking an acrobatic attempt wide before drilling a low strike off target.
At the other end of the pitch, Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer enjoyed a quiet evening, facing just one shot on target from the hosts. Meanwhile, Oblak produced a fine save to tip a deflected strike from Dayot Upamecano onto the crossbar.
Bayern remain unbeaten in the Champions League this season and will continue their campaign against Lille on Wednesday, November 25. Atletico face Norwegian champions Viking on the same evening.
