The Bavarian club announced on Tuesday the signing of Nestory Irankunda, a 17-year-old striker of Burundian origin.

Bayern Munich have announced the signing of 17-year-old prospect Nestory Irankunda, considered the rising star of Australian football, from Adelaide United.

The young striker will join Bayern on July 1, 2024, as part of a “long-term contract” the terms of which have not been specified. “Nestory is an extremely fast winger, a good dribbler and a finisher with a good feel for goal”said Jochen Sauer, director of youth development at Bayern. “We are convinced of his potential and believe that he will reach new levels with us.”

Irankunda, born in a refugee camp in Tanzania after his parents fled fighting in their home country of Burundi, has previously represented Australia at the under-17 level. Already summoned to the national team for the matches against Colombia and Ecuador in March, he trained with the Socceroos without participating in these two matches.

His arrival is in line with the transfers of young players with high potential detected by Bayern recruiters around the world, like those of Canadian full-back Alphonso Davies, of Liberian origin recruited in July 2018 (at 17 years) or even the French Kingsley Coman, who arrived at 19 on loan before a permanent transfer two years later and Mathys Tel (18 years old).
