BVB cannot win against FSV Mainz 05 in their own stadium and must let FC Bayern, who win in Cologne, pass by.

With the final whistle, Borussia Dortmund sank into bewilderment and sadness – in the fabulous finale of a rollercoaster season, BVB lost the championship title after all. A 2:2 (0:2) against FSV Mainz 05 robbed the team of coach Edin Terzic in front of their deeply shocked fans the gigantic chance to finally tear FC Bayern from the throne after a tormenting ten years. Instead, Borussia threw the bowl in the lap of the rival, who was shaking to make it 2-1 (1-0) at 1. FC Köln.

Sebastien Haller misses a penalty

Championship celebrations, the gigantic championship parade with hundreds of thousands of people – all of this falls through because BVB lost its nerve in the decisive game. Andreas Hanche-Olsen (15th) and Karim Onisiwo (24th) brought the stadium seething with excitement with early goals, the Dortmund ran in front of 81,365 spectators with growing desperation in vain. Sebastien Haller (19th) also missed a penalty kick when the score was 0:1: horror spread. The goals of Raphael Guerreiro (69th) and Niklas Süle (90th + 6) did not change that.

Just don’t freak out, keep everything “as normal as possible”: Terzic had sworn that in advance during the press conference. But how? The stadium was buzzing like a beehive an hour before kick-off – and it wasn’t just the visit of a stray swarm of bees that disrupted the Sky broadcast. The fans oscillated between anticipation, great confidence and a dash of fear, the atmosphere was deafening.

Tension slowly built up throughout the city as the morning wore on. Even fans had stayed overnight in front of the stadium restaurant “Strobels”, at noon there was a big march from the Kreuzviertel in the direction of the stadium. The team bus was greeted with great cheering and Bengal fire – the great, perhaps even historic opportunity was electrifying: “It’s in our hands” was written on a huge banner in front of the south stand.

Accordingly, a ten thousand-voiced roar accompanied every duel won, every throw-in, every half-scoring opportunity. Niklas Süle had the first in the seventh minute. The Mainz team tried to be more than just an ingredient in this cauldron – their coach Bo Svensson spread his arms reassuringly.

And FC Bayern led in Cologne. When Hanche-Olsen also scored for Mainz, the entire BVB structure of the past week seemed to falter. Dominik Kohr immediately fouled Guerreiro in the penalty area – but Haller’s penalty was saved by goalkeeper Finn Dahmen. It was the disgusting game of nerves that BVB would have liked to avoid. The 0: 2 by Onisiwo had an almost paralyzing effect.

Borussia Dortmund lacks conviction

Then Karim Adeyemi had to be substituted due to injury, and captain Marco Reus got his chance to quench an unfulfilled longing for the championship trophy. But his team lacked conviction. Julian Brandt didn’t finish powerful enough (44′), Donyell Malen’s header (45’+4) touched the outer post.

Terzic also brought in Youssoufa Moukoko in the second half, significantly increasing the risk. The fans also roused themselves to loud support, they celebrated when BVB goalkeeper Gregor Kobel saved after a counterattack against Lee Jae Sung (48th). However, it was not an unleashed Dortmund rush: the search was now on for someone who would set the stadium back on fire and awaken faith. Mainz countered – Onisiwo hit the post (57th), Guerreiro still in goal. Süle’s goal caused high tension. But Dortmund sank into mourning.
