BBVA has obtained, for the fourth consecutive year, the highest score in the bank category in the European region and the second best score globally – shared with other entities – in the latest Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI). This is the global benchmark index for sustainability, the annual composition of which was made public on December 8, 2023. A total of 27 banks from around the world have been included in the DJSI this year.
BBVA has reached a total score of 84 points out of 100. The financial entity has achieved 84 points in the economic and corporate governance dimension; 70 points in the environmental; and 89 in the social. In addition, it has achieved the maximum score (100 points) in various areas evaluated: Transparency and reporting; tax strategy; Human rights; and Relationship with the client.
“Being recognized as the most sustainable bank in Europe for four years in a row by the global sustainability benchmark index is a milestone for us. On this path towards a green and fair transition we have a fundamental role as intermediaries. We are not the protagonists but our role is decisive to accompany the entire economy in its decarbonization”said Javier Rodríguez Soler, director of BBVA’s Sustainability and CIB area.
This year, more than 13,000 companies have been invited to participate in the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA). And more than 3,400 companies have responded to a questionnaire made up of more than a hundred questions on environmental, social and governance (ESG) matters.
Only the 10% of companies from each sector with the best score in this analysis are chosen to be part of the index. The evaluation of the rating agency S&P determines the inclusion of companies in this Dow Jones Sustainability Index.
