SÃO PAULO (Reuters) – The National Union of Central Bank Employees (Sinal) reported this Sunday that it called a 24-hour strike from Wednesday to begin discussing the handover of commissioned positions and the indication of a strike for time undetermined, amid demands for greater appreciation of the category.

According to Sinal, the strike will take place from 2:30 pm on December 13th, Wednesday, until 2:30 pm the following day. On Wednesday, the Monetary Policy Committee (Copom) will be in its second day of meeting, with broad expectations that directors will cut the Selic rate to 11.75%.

“The radicalization of the movement, which began in July this year, reflects the category’s indignation regarding the asymmetrical treatment it has been receiving from the government,” said Sinal in a note, saying there is “inflexibility” from the Executive in relation to the category’s demands.

Local government employees have been working under a standard operating regime since the beginning of July to pressure the government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to promote a career restructuring at the BC, in addition to demanding a type of productivity bonus.

The union warned that, if the situation escalates to a strike, the Central Bank’s management could be “deeply” obstructed, resulting in delays and non-delivery of services, such as the maintenance of Pix, which would be jeopardized.

Furthermore, there could be a greater impact on the completion of ongoing projects, such as the preparation of the digital real (Drex), said Sinal.

The president of the Central Bank, Roberto Campos Neto, said last Thursday that the institution has fought hard to improve the working conditions of its employees, but has not been effective so far.
