New Delhi: One of the most frustrating things about air travel is the long wait at the luggage belt to collect your check-in bag from the airport after your flight lands. The government is now keeping an eye on this problem. The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) has ordered airlines to ensure that the first check-in bag is on the belt within 10 minutes of the aircraft landing and the last bag within 30 minutes. Airlines have been given 10 days till February 26 to take necessary steps to comply with these rules.

Now you will not have to wait long for your check-in bag in air travel. The Civil Aviation Ministry has made a new rule, according to which a maximum time of 30 minutes has been given from the time the engine is switched off after the aircraft lands and stops at the parking lot till the last check-in bag reaches the belt. This rule has come into effect from February 16 and all airlines like Air India, IndiGo, Aakasha, SpiceJet, Vistara, Air India Express Connect and Air India Express will have to follow it.

surveillance started

Under the leadership of Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) has started continuous monitoring of baggage arrival time at six major airports since January. “Since the beginning of the review exercise, the performance of all airlines is being monitored on a weekly basis and there has been improvement, but it is still not as per the prescribed standards,” the ministry said. The ministry further said, ‘This monitoring is currently being carried out at six major airports, however, BCAS has directed the airlines to achieve the prescribed levels also at all the airports to which they fly.’
