Voting will be held on September 21 for the election of the next president in Sri Lanka. Wickremesinghe took over as president when Sri Lanka was going through a terrible economic crisis. He has worked to bring the economy back on track.
The situation in Maldives and Bangladesh is also bad
Apart from this, Maldives is also facing an economic crisis. Maldives needs help from other countries. At the same time, Bangladesh is also facing a political crisis. The issue of Bangladesh affects India the most. When Ranil Wickremesinghe took over as President in 2022, Sri Lanka was grappling with public unrest sparked by the economic crisis. Protests took place across the country, due to which thousands of people entered the Rashtrapati Bhavan. The then President had to flee the country. The same incident was also seen in Bangladesh recently.
China’s intervention in Sri Lanka too
On the other hand, relations between Sri Lanka and India have always been good. But China’s interference has increased a lot in Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, the President of Sri Lanka said that we have had good relations with China and we will continue to do so. But we will first look at our interests. He said that but we will work on our terms keeping in mind India’s interests, after all India is only twenty miles away from us and we have had historical relations. He said that China’s influence is going to increase in the Indian Ocean region. They are already working with many countries. China wants to become a global power after America.
China is trying to gain a foothold everywhere
China is trying to establish its foothold in the entire South Asia. The President of Sri Lanka has also admitted this. China has been the biggest ally of Pakistan. Apart from this, there is a government in Maldives which has the support of China. The dragon is also expanding its foothold in Nepal. China also has deep relations with the new government of Bangladesh. Here, Tibet, Taiwan and Hong Kong are already under the control of China. In such a situation, it is clear that China is trying to become a super power under its expansionist policy, which can become a headache for India.
