A bear attacked a man last night in the Croatian Plitvice Lakes National Park, biting him on the hand, local media reported today.

The victim was admitted to a hospital in the nearby town of Gospich, the police reported, BTA reported.

According to the same source, the incident happened on Friday evening in the village where the man lives.

The bear bit the right arm of the 64-year-old man, who suffered hand injuries, muscle tears and facial scratches.

The hospital informed the HINA agency that the victim is in a stable condition, but must remain under observation.

Plitvice Lakes Park, the largest natural park in Croatia and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, attracts more than 1.5 million tourists every year, notes AFP.

According to estimates, the number of brown bears in Croatia is around 1000. They live mainly in the forested areas of central Croatia, where the Plitvice Lakes National Park is located.

Although they are a protected species, the authorities allow the hunting of about a hundred bears per year.
