If you’re an Android user and own a pair of Beats headphones, like the Powerbeats Pro 2, you’re likely familiar with the Beats app. Beyond controlling headphone functions, the app simplifies firmware updates. A notification appears when an update is available; simply tap the “Update” button and follow the on-screen prompts. The process takes just minutes.

Though, using those same Beats headphones with an iPhone presents a different experience. There’s no dedicated update button. Instead, you must place the earbuds in their case, connect the case to power, and keep your iPhone,iPad,or Mac nearby. Apple then decides when-and if-to initiate the update. Even with a newly released firmware version, it may not appear immediately. This same cumbersome process applies to AirPods. Given Apple’s reputation for seamless integration, it’s puzzling why a simple “Update” button, mirroring the Android app’s functionality, hasn’t been implemented to resolve this persistent user frustration.
