“Because of faith”: a same-sex couple ordered a wedding cake – the confectioner refused

by time news

A baker refused to make a wedding cake for a lesbian couple, following her Christian faith. The two filed a lawsuit against her for discrimination but she was acquitted by the judge.

Kathy Miller, owner of the Tastries bakery in California, USA, received a request in 2017 from two women who asked her to bake their wedding cake for them. The couple Eileen and Maria Rodriguez del Rio, encountered a refusal on the part of the baker, since their lifestyle is against her beliefs and she sent You two to another bakery.

The women decided not to be silent about Miller’s rejection, and filed a discrimination lawsuit against her. On Friday (October 21), five years later, Judge Eric Bradshaw ruled in favor of the bakery’s owner, who he said “acted lawfully.” It was also argued in the court that: “A person’s freedom to adhere to his faith is anchored in the First Amendment, and the Supreme Court of the United States has long affirmed the freedom of faith.” Miller wrote on her Facebook account after the win: “Thank you to my friends, family members and the Tastries team for the support in the last five years”.

Many Americans did not understand the ruling, as many of them went to the bakery’s Facebook page and posted pictures of same-sex people kissing. One of the responses read: “I would love to see your business go down the drain – that’s where it belongs. No hate monger deserves to be successful.”

The two have since married and apparently hired the services of another pastry shop.
