The AfD wants to talk about the consequences for Brandenburg after the knife attack in Solingen. A few weeks before the state elections, the party is calling for drastic steps.

Following the fatal knife attack in Solingen, the AfD in the Brandenburg state parliament has presented a list of demands for the upcoming special session of parliament. The motion for a resolution includes a ban on asylum seekers, people granted asylum and Ukrainian war refugees attending public events.

“Solingen can be anywhere today or tomorrow,” said AfD MP Lena Kotré in Potsdam. “We are at a point where we can no longer control the situation.”

The AfD’s demands for the special session on Thursday also include the establishment of a Brandenburg border police force. In addition, asylum seekers who “take vacation trips to their country of origin” should lose their protection status and “return permanently to their home country.” Rainbow flags should also be banned on all public buildings.

The Brandenburg AfD is largely isolated in the state parliament. The motion for a resolution is unlikely to find support among the other parties.

At a press conference, the AfD’s top candidate for the state elections on September 22, Hans-Christoph Berndt, spoke of a “policy of diversity pushed by the CDU, SPD, Greens, FDP and Left Party”. This is the cause of the “loss of internal security” and leads to “the formation of parallel societies that are hostile to our country”.

On Friday evening, three people were killed with a knife at the town festival in Solingen, North Rhine-Westphalia. Eight people were injured, four of them seriously. The suspected perpetrator is a 26-year-old Syrian who is now in custody. The Federal Prosecutor’s Office is investigating him for murder and on suspicion of membership in the terrorist group IS, which claimed responsibility for the attack.
