The citizens’ festival in Chemnitz will not take place next weekend as planned, but two weeks later. The organizers announced this on Tuesday evening. “The decision was not easy for everyone involved,” said a statement.

The reason for this is the bad weather forecast. The weather service has announced 14 degrees and rain for the weekend. “We mainly work with public funding, for example from Neustart Kultur, and therefore bear a great deal of responsibility. It does not make sense to go to an event for three days that no one comes to because of the rain and autumnal cold,” says Bianca Steinbock, CEO of the club. The basic idea of the association is to bring the city’s society together in the middle. “This can only succeed if we get as many people on board as possible.”

In addition, the organizers refer to the fair in Grüna, which ended prematurely on Sunday due to heavy rainfall. Water had also damaged the stage technology there. “In view of the flooding at the fair in Grüna last weekend, we would also like to avoid damage to any sodden green spaces,” the association said. The new date is now the weekend from September 10th to 12th.

The citizens’ festival was launched in 2019 by an association as a kind of replacement for the city festival. Three years ago a young man was killed on the sidelines of the city festival; the town hall had therefore refrained from organizing further city festivals.
