Jakarta: Indonesia’s parliament has approved a bill to relocate the capital of the Southeast Asian nation of Indonesia from Jakarta to the island of Borneo. It has also been decided to name the new capital ‘Nusandra’.
The total population of Indonesia is 26 crores. One crore people live in the capital Jakarta and more than three crore people in nearby cities. Currently, it ranks first among submerged cities due to disasters and natural disasters.

Geologists have warned that one-third of Jakarta will be submerged by 2050 if the situation continues, with President Joko Widodo deciding to relocate the country’s capital.

In this context, the bill to shift the Indonesian capital from Jakarta to the island of Borneo was passed unanimously in the country’s parliament yesterday. It has also been decided to name the new capital Nusandra.
Although the majority population of the country is Muslim, Indonesia is a country of Hindu heritage and culture. More than 40 lakh Hindus live here. The national emblem of the country, Garuda, is noteworthy. Indonesia was ruled by Hindu kings until the 16th century.

When the Hindu king Hyam came to rule Indonesia, he brought under his control many countries including Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and the Philippines. He named it Nusandara to connect the island nations.
