Beeper: Connect All Your Chat Apps in One Place

by Priyanka Patel

Beeper Aims to End App-Jumping with Unified Messaging Platform

The frustration of managing multiple messaging apps is a common one, and Beeper offers a solution by consolidating chats from 11 different platforms into a single interface.

For many, the digital landscape is fragmented by the need to constantly switch between apps to connect with friends, family, and colleagues. Beeper addresses this pain point by allowing users to link their existing chat accounts and access everything in one place.

How Beeper Connects Your Chats

Beeper functions by either storing messages via the cloud or keeping them entirely on the user’s device. The platform is built on Matrix, an open-source chat protocol that facilitates connections – known as “bridges” – to various messaging services.

The technical process differs depending on whether the chat app utilizes encryption. For encrypted apps like Signal, messages are first encrypted by the Beeper client, sent through the bridge, and then decrypted and re-encrypted using Signal’s encryption protocol. Non-encrypted apps utilize Beeper Cloud, though messages are still encrypted during transmission.

Which Apps Does Beeper Support?

Currently, Beeper supports up to 11 popular chat applications, including:

  • Messenger
  • Google Messages
  • Instagram
  • WhatsApp
  • X (formerly Twitter)
  • Discord
  • Telegram
  • Slack
  • LinkedIn
  • Signal
  • Google Chat

The service is available across multiple platforms – iOS, Android, Windows, macOS, and Linux – with full message access as long as Beeper Cloud is utilized. However, a key limitation exists: iMessage is currently not supported, though future additions are possible.

Setting Up Beeper: A Streamlined Process

According to users, setting up Beeper is remarkably straightforward. The process begins with downloading the application on the desired platform and entering an email address – which doesn’t necessarily need to be linked to existing chat accounts. After verifying the email, users are prompted to securely store a Recovery Code, essential for account access and recovery, especially when switching devices. Because Beeper employs zero-access encryption, the company itself cannot recover lost messages.

Linking chat apps is then accomplished through separate lists for Beeper Cloud Accounts and On-Device Accounts. Beeper Cloud Accounts, available for all 11 supported apps, offer encryption and cloud storage for seamless syncing across devices. On-Device Accounts, prioritizing privacy, store everything locally and are currently limited to WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook Messenger, Signal, Telegram, and X. Connecting an account simply requires tapping “Connect” and logging in as usual.

Navigating and Using Beeper

Once connected, all chat apps appear in a unified list. Users can filter to view individual apps via a “hamburger menu.” A search function allows for quick access to specific users or keywords, and Beeper supports core chat features like emojis, contact additions, group chats, and threads. While most features are supported, some functionalities – such as voice chats or message editing on WhatsApp – may still require using the native app.

Beeper offers tiered pricing. The free version limits users to five linked accounts. Beeper Plus, at $10 per month, expands this to 10 accounts and includes additional features. Beeper Plus Plus, priced at $50 per month, provides unlimited accounts.

Security and Privacy Considerations

Beeper has recently implemented changes to encrypt all chats stored in the cloud, and the addition of on-device accounts provides an extra layer of privacy for those concerned about cloud storage. All chats are fully encrypted, requiring the recovery code for access. However, Beeper acknowledges that using end-to-end encryption within native apps remains the most secure option.

Alternatives to Beeper

While Beeper is a leading contender in the unified messaging space, alternatives exist. Texts, previously a competitor, was merged into Beeper after acquisition by Automattic. IM+ stands out as the closest alternative, supporting over 24 chat apps and integrating with ChatGPT for enhanced messaging capabilities. Franz offers support for a growing list of apps, but is limited to desktop platforms and offers only three free accounts. Regardless of the chosen service, users should remain vigilant against spam messages.
