Bonn (NRW) – The fashion store “Rednib” actually sells chic T-shirts, hoodies and caps. But for a few weeks now, the two owners of the shop have been offering a rustic beer table set for sale – although not entirely voluntarily.

When Tobias Binder (35) and his brother Sebastian opened the boutique in the city center about a year ago, they set up a table and two beer benches in front of their shop. “The idea was simply that our customers could sit down or we could take our lunch break here. Passers-by could also have rested here,” says Tobias.

Since then, no one has complained to the managers. Emergency vehicles would also always get through without any problems…
But then the benches came to the attention of the Bonn public order office – and the authority determined that they should not have been set up. This would only be permitted for outdoor dining, which the store does not have.
Tables and benches only for catering!
“If you do not sell seating furniture, but simply want to offer your customers outdoor seating, this is only possible if you also carry out a catering activity in addition to retail,” said the city of Bonn in response to a BILD query. And further: “In addition to the product displays, you would also have to apply for outdoor catering and could then serve your customers outside.”

Or this solution: “We then got a tip from another shop owner that we should simply offer the benches for sale. The city would then approve this as a display of goods,” says Tobias.
No sooner said than done – and now the table and benches have price tags, each costing 199.99 euros! “That worked. We got permission from the city.” However: “So far no one has wanted to buy them…”
