As the rather disappointing summer box office season comes to an end, Warner Bros.’ Beetle juice Beetlejuice scored a huge debut, the third biggest of 2024.
The long-awaited sequel to the 1988 original Tim Burton Second, the classic Beetlejuice earned a whopping $110 million in its opening weekend Expiration.
The debut surpassed the original film’s entire worldwide gross of $74.8 million 36 years earlier.
It also represents the third-highest debut of 2024 behind Inside Out 2 ($154.2 million) and Deadpool & Wolverine ($211.4 million). also great reviews.
The opening is also the second-highest of all time for the month of September, behind 2017’s IT ($123.4 million).

It earned a strong per-screen average of $24,043 and managed to outperform projections that placed it between $90 and $100 million.
The film, produced on a reported budget of $100 million, brings back Michael Keaton in the title role, alongside Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz, with Jenna Ortega as her daughter Astrid.
The sequel did not fare as well overseas, grossing only another $35 million from foreign markets for a worldwide gross of $145.4 million.
The film easily dethroned six-time box office champion Deadpool & Wolverine, which seemingly saw its final weekend atop the box office.
It fell 53.3% to second place with $7.2 million, earning a per-screen average of $2,117 from 3,400 theaters, a drop of 230 theaters from last weekend.
The superhero sequel’s domestic haul now stands at $614 million, the 15th highest-grossing film domestically of all time, and $1.28 billion worldwide.
Rounding out the top five are Reagan ($5.2M, $18.5M domestic), Alien: Romulus ($3.9M, $97.1M worldwide) and It Ends With Us ($141.3M domestic).

This weekend saw the limited release of Utopia’s Red Rooms, which earned $40,295 from 50 theaters for a dismal $805 per screen average.
The MTV documentary ¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor! also opened in one theater, grossing $21,750.
Next weekend brings to wide release Universal’s Speak No Evil starring James McEvoy and Lionsgate’s The Killers Game starring Dave Bautista.
