After opening the Venice Film Festival 2024, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has been in cinemas since September 5.
The Tim Burton film arrives 36 years after the original, which has become a cult classic: once again in the role of the “spooky spirit” is Michael Keaton, and we also find Winona Ryder in the Beetlejuice 2 cast.
Joining them are Willem Dafoe and Jenna Ortega, who rose to fame thanks to Burton, who chose her as the protagonist of the Netflix series Wednesday, as well as Monica Bellucci.
Recently, Tim Burton received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the film is released in cinemas worldwide: we understand therefore how Beetlejuice Beetlejuice ends, in which the author rediscovers the fun and spirit of his early works.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice: the trailer
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice: plot
The plot of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice sees Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder) now an adult and a widow. She has used her ability to see the dead to become the star of a show where she talks with the ghosts that haunt people’s homes.
Her manager is Rory (Justin Theroux), who is also her boyfriend. Their daughter Astrid (Jenna Ortega) cannot stand the paranormal, believing her mother’s activities to be just a performance.
However, when Lydia’s father dies, the whole family must return to Winter River for the funeral. In the attic, the Maitland model still exists and, just like many years ago, Beetlejuice returns for a visit.
This time, however, he is also in trouble: his wife, Delores (Monica Bellucci), whom he hasn’t seen for hundreds of years, has escaped and wants revenge.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice: the explanation of the ending
We arrive then at the explanation of the ending of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
While Lydia and her family are back in Winter River, she has several visions of Beetlejuice. She is terrified he might return. Rory, who does not believe she can truly see the dead, tries to convince her that everything is okay by saying the spirit’s name three times: this invokes him again.
This time, however, they both need each other: Beetlejuice wants Lydia’s help to rid himself of his wife Delores, while the woman must save her daughter.
Astrid, while riding her bike in the small town, meets a boy who seems interesting, Jeremy (Arthur Conti): he loves old books and movies, and has a vinyl collection.
He also seems very interested in the realm of the dead: he convinces the girl to open a portal to the afterlife. Astrid then discovers that Jeremy actually died many years earlier and she can see him because, just like her mother, she has developed the power to see spirits now that she is 17.
However, the boy hasn’t told her everything: before dying from a fall from a treehouse and breaking his neck, he killed his parents and now wants to take Astrid to the realm of the dead to trade her life for the one he lost.
Lydia realizes the danger her daughter is in and accepts to go to the realm of the dead with Beetlejuice to marry him in order to save Astrid.
Chaos ensues: Astrid and Lydia reunite and also meet the deceased father of the girl, Richard, who asks the two women to get along. Delores is defeated and it seems that the marriage between Lydia and Beetlejuice is indeed celebrated.
However, the contract signed by the woman was not valid, so she is free to return to the living with her daughter. Lydia then decides to stop doing the show to spend more time with her daughter.
There are also several time jumps: we see that, during a vacation, Astrid meets a boy dressed as a vampire and falls in love.
They get married, and she becomes pregnant. Lydia is attending the birth, but a little Beetlejuice is born, causing panic in the hospital.
At that point, the woman wakes up and we see that Beetlejuice is next to her, speaking to her as if she were his wife.
Lydia then wakes up again, but this time she is alone in bed.
The meaning of the ending of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice thus opens the possibility of a third film (whose title, it is safe to assume, could be Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Beetlejuice).
By deciding to take care of her daughter, Lydia seems to have severed ties with the past, to begin a new life. However, when Astrid starts her own family, the woman begins to sense the presence of Beetlejuice again.
This means that the spirit has not yet given up on marrying her and could return at any moment.
