The Poznań Fair is one of the inseparable symbols of the capital of Wielkopolska. Located in the very center of the city, the facility has always attracted crowds of guests to Poznań. Even before the war, life was vibrant there and numerous economic and cultural events took place there. From the resources of the National Digital Archives, we have selected for you unique photos of the Poznań Fair from the 1920s and 1930s. Experience a real time travel!

The history of the beginnings of the Poznań Fair dates back to 1911. It was then that the East German Exhibition was held in the area at the intersection of today’s Roosevelta and Bukowska Streets. At that time, the characteristic Upper Silesian Tower was erected, which was designed by Hans Poelzig, a professor at the Technical University in Berlin.

The idea of organizing a fair in Poznań by Poles was born in 1917, during the congress of the Union of Merchant Societies in Poznań. It was an organization gathering Polish merchants from Greater Poland and Gdańsk Pomerania. It was supposed to be an international fair, organized on the model of the Leipzig Fair. The idea to organize cyclical exhibitions was implemented a few years later, after the Poles won the Greater Poland Uprising.

The 1st Poznań Fair, as the event was then called, took place in 1921 (from May 28 to June 5), and the first director was Mieczysław Krzyżankiewicz.

The first international fair took place in 1925. Until then, Polish companies, companies from the Free City of Gdańsk and foreign companies that had their branches in Poland and were represented by Polish citizens could participate in the fair. However, a year earlier, in 1924, contracts were signed with companies from Czechoslovakia, France, Yugoslavia, Latvia, Germany, Romania, Switzerland and Sweden. In 1927, the fair was admitted to the International Fair Association.

From the very beginning of its existence, Targi Poznańskie attracted crowds to Poznań. From the resources of the National Digital Archives, we have selected for you unique photos of the Poznań Fair from the 1920s and 1930s.
