The “smart state” and the steps our country is taking in the direction of digital transformation and reducing bureaucracy, were at the center of the second day of the TechFuse Conference held in Ioannina, in the presence of the Minister of Digital Governance Dimitris Papastergiou.

A first step is the abolition of certificates, promoted through the recently passed Digital Single Market and Digital Services Act. With this law, among other things, the Ministry of Digital Governance introduced regulations for the further utilization of the interoperability of individual electronic applications and registers, with the aim of facilitating the daily life of citizens and businesses and strengthening their trust in the state.

The ex officio search and abolition of the issuance of supporting documents for the processing of administrative procedures, with the aim that the supporting documents recorded in the National Register of Administrative Procedures “Mitos” will be drawn directly and the citizen will no longer need to present them.

“It is the beginning of the end of the certificates”, noted Mr. Papastergiou, speaking to the panel of the Conference, while he added that with the consent of the citizen, from his mobile phone, he can give the authorization to state agencies to receive specific data, in order to carry out tasks.

“Impressive work in Ioannina”

“The ecosystem that has been built over the last decade or so shows that the region can also play a leading role in innovation, and given the existence of many large and smaller companies, the message we can send is that we can when Greece takes the step to technology, let’s not structure it only in Athens and Thessaloniki, but everywhere, because everywhere there are good ideas”, said Mr. Papastergiou on the occasion of his presence at the Conference, which attempts to combine technology, innovation and culture.

Infrastructure commitments

An important obstacle to the further development of the ecosystem and not only is the lack of a broadband network, with the ministry having asked providers for binding proposals for its completion in four major cities, including Ioannina.

According to Mr. Papastergiou, this process has started for Ioannina, while an important role in the further penetration of the broadband network in households is the subsidy planned by the Ministry, through vouchers, for residential optical fiber and its upgrade.

Accordingly, Mr. Papastergiou noted that the development of infrastructure must also be balanced in terms of data storage, the so-called Data Centers. “We are happy to see how this can spread, which is why the National Technology and Research Infrastructure Network is also participating in the conference today,” he noted.
