China has publicly threatened that countries that boycott the Winter Olympics in their own country could face dire consequences.
In the wake of allegations of genocide against the Muslim minority in China, many countries around the world have condemned China for its human rights abuses. The United States has announced it will boycott the Winter Olympics in February. Following this, countries including Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the UK announced that they would not send government officials to the Winter Olympics and would only send athletes. In addition, European countries, including France and Germany, have stated they expect a general EU decision on the issue. In this context, China has condemned the United States for politicizing the Olympics, blaming them in vain and threatening that countries boycotting the Games would face dire consequences.
