Tehran reopened its diplomatic representation in Saudi Arabia with fanfare on June 6 after seven years of closure, marking the entry into “a new era of cooperation” between the two great rivals, Shiite and Sunni, according to Deputy Minister Alireza Bigdeli who came in person to cut the ribbon. The ceremony took place under the sponsorship of President Xi Jinping’s China, the architect of this spectacular rapprochement behind the back of the United States, which is reshuffling the cards in the Middle East.
This reopening is the first tangible step confirming the trilateral agreement announced in March in Beijing, where the two enemy brothers have undertaken to resolve by “dialogue” their differences. A shattering breakthrough that took Washington by surprise, affirming the growing influence of China in a region until now its preserve.
