The actor and director Edoardo De Angelis with the film “Comandante” opens the 80th edition of the Venice Film Festival

In Venice we meet the director Edoardo De Angelis and Pierfrancesco Favino, protagonists of the opening of the Venice Film Festival with the film “Comandante”.

There are no Hollywood stars, but you immerse yourself in all the characters, could you Favino, the (Italian) Hollywood star?

Favino: «What are Hollywood stars like? They are different. Instead I am happy to be an Italian actor, I always have been, I will continue to be. I also worked there, but in the end I increasingly chose to stay here… For me the boundaries between actors are very blurred. The actors, the artists are quite bizarre beings»

A question for the director. You managed to release visions, while locking the actors and spectators for two hours inside an iron casing in the dark: a submarine. How did he do it?
De Angelis: «The relationship between such an enclosed space and the immensity of the ocean was certainly very attractive, but we have never used wide angle lenses. We never wanted to show the room bigger than it was. In fact, we just filled the frame with every single bit to show how cramped it was.

If the Crotone refugees had met Salvatore Todaro would they be safe, in your opinion? He twice, despite being a fascist and in war, saved men at sea
Favino: «I believe that this is the law of the sea. In our film, this is underlined at the end. My personal adherence to this story was in finding myself in the idea that being Italian is also represented by the ability to know how to help others. I believe in this, it is a personal value. I can’t claim that it is in general, but I like being able to somehow expose myself politically through this film by saying that in my opinion it would be right to respect the law of the sea. I was used to and I was raised with open doors to always lend a hand to anyone in difficulty. I will always thank my parents for this teaching. That’s probably where the desire to put myself in other people’s shoes comes from through stories and doing this job»

To save men today, as in the past, do we have to disobey the laws?
«If I see someone in trouble today with my little boat, I have to stop and talk about vacation. My job is not to suggest a solution but to show the problem. An actor’s job is to put himself in the shoes of someone who has given the opportunity to see part of the story and who has made a gesture, like Salvatore Todaro, after which we don’t decide. But if this were to make someone think that decisions can also be these, I would be happy.

If even a fascist did it in 1940 during the war, why not do it today?
De Angelis: “It seems to me a good question.”

And the answer?
De Angelis: «I ask the question, the answer comes from whoever sees the film. There are eternal laws governing relationships between humans at sea and those can sometimes contravene written laws. If the written, contingent laws are not harmonious with the eternal ones, then in that case the human being not only has the right, but the duty to break them». (by Nino Luca, sent to Venice)
