Belarus claims: “Our diplomat attacked at embassy in London”

by time news

Belarus’s Foreign Ministry claimed today that one of its diplomats was wounded last night when activists of an “exiled organization” attacked the London embassy. The British authorities have not yet responded to the incident.

According to the Belarusian statement, a number of people “hit the front of the embassy building and then physically attacked the Belarusian diplomats who arrived at the scene and one of them was seriously injured and needed medical treatment”. The diagnosis showed that the diplomat was suffering from a nasal crisis, a mild concussion and a broken tooth.

It was further alleged that when police arrived at the scene, the attackers tried to escape but some of them were arrested and that it turned out that they belonged to an exiled extremist organization called Nadzia which supports the opposition to the regime of President Alexander Lukashenko. Alleged photos from the scene showed several men with masks and one of them gave a blow to another man.

Due to the incident – which has not yet received approval from the UK authorities – the commissioner of the British Embassy in Minsk was summoned to the Foreign Office, where a formal protest was filed alongside a demand that a full investigation be held and that those responsible be prosecuted.

“This attack was carried out against people who defended the interests of Belarusian citizens and worked to improve relations between the two countries, and it once again proved the true face and methods of the fanatics that a number of Western countries are trying to portray as peaceful protesters,” the Foreign Ministry said. “We assume that the British authorities will take all appropriate steps to protect the embassy against any invasion or damage and to prevent a breach of mission security or damage to dignity.”
