Over the course of five years, Belarus has lost 15 points in the international ranking of peacefulness, which is created by the Institute of Economics and Peace based on the study of 23 indicators in the sphere of the country’s involvement in internal and international conflicts, as well as the level of harmony or discord within the nation.

The “Global Peace Index” is increasingly called the security index, as it also takes into account the level of crime in the country, military spending, the number of terrorist acts and violent demonstrations, the harmony of relations with neighboring countries, the stability of the political situation, as well as the number of internally displaced persons and refugees.

In 2018, Belarus ranked 101st in these indicators, and in 2023 it moved to 116th position. Among neighboring countries, Latvia took 27th place, Poland – 29th, Lithuania – 36th, Ukraine – 154th and Russia – 158th.

Researchers note that the peacefulness index in Europe has worsened over the last year. The war between Russia and Ukraine caused serious consequences throughout the world, especially in Europe.

“Of the five European countries with the greatest deterioration in peacefulness in 2023, three border Ukraine. In these countries, to a large extent, deteriorations in indicators of political instability and relations with neighboring countries were observed,” the study notes.

Since the beginning of the measurements, Iceland has remained in first place as the safest and most peaceful country in the region and the world.

The index decreased the most in Ukraine, and the main factor was the Russian military invasion.
