The US and NATO believe that Belarus may soon join Russia’s war with Ukraine. This is what a senior official told CNN.
“Belarus is more likely to join the conflict,” the source said. “Putin needs support. Anything can help.”
An opposition figure in Belarus also said that combat units of the Belarusian army were ready to enter Ukraine in the coming days. According to him, thousands of soldiers are preparing to enter. According to the source, this will not have much tactical significance for the war, but geopolitically it will have an effect following the fact that this is another country entering the war.
In addition, a senior NATO intelligence official claimed that the alliance estimated that the Belarusian government was preparing the atmosphere for justifying a Belarusian attack on Ukraine.
“Russia has partially attacked Ukraine from Belarus’ territory, and thousands of Russian troops have gathered on the border there. Sanctions have targeted both Russians and Belarusians, including Belarusian President Lukashenko.”
Last month Belarus acted to change its constitution in order to allow the country to host Russian troops and Russian nuclear weapons on its territory on a regular basis. Although the Americans made it clear that they saw no evidence that the Russians had transferred such weapons to Belarus or that they intended to do so.
It should be clarified that so far the Americans have seen no evidence of Belarus’s active participation in the fighting.
