In banks, cashiers began to look more closely at banknotes when exchanging currency and more often refuse to accept banknotes, customers complain. Belsat found out that the banks really changed the rules, and this is due to the sanctions.

“People often cannot hand over dollars, because banknotes have begun to be checked very carefully in banks. I saw how a man wanted to change dollars for euros, so they looked at each bill and gave it back a dozen. Because of this, queues are everywhere, as they thoroughly look through the currency,” eyewitnesses say.

Belsat checked this information in the contact centers of several banks.

Technobank said that recently the rules for accepting currency have not changed: “Near each exchange office you can familiarize yourself with the signs of the solvency of banknotes. These signs are common and have not changed recently. If the bill does not fit, then the cashier has the right to refuse to accept it.

Alfa-Bank also assured that “there were no changes in the rules for accepting banknotes,” and each cashier decides on his own whether the banknote meets the requirements.

At the same time, BNB-Bank said that a month ago the National Bank approved changes in the rules for accepting currency, and advised them to read the document on their website. The same instruction is published on the Belarusbank website. The contact center of this organization clarified that the “list of signs of solvency of banknotes” was approved in June, and now all Belarusian banks use this manual:

“Yes, the requirements for banknotes have changed a bit. Previously, each bank developed a list of solvency signs on its own, but now this list is unified. As I understand it, this is due to the fact that we are now unable to send banknotes for collection.”

This service allows you to pay a commission to send the currency to the bank that issued it in order to check the solvency and replace the worn or damaged currency.

“Now, due to certain events, there is no such possibility, there is no service either, therefore such a general list has been approved,” they say in Belarusbank.

The same explanations were given in Belinvestbank. The word “sanctions” was also not used there:

“In connection with the restrictions introduced in February last year, the acceptance rules have been tightened, since we do not exchange banknotes directly with those who issue the currency. If there are any seals found in the ultraviolet, they do not change in our bank. Previously, we could hand over banknotes for collection, now there is no such possibility, so the rules have changed.”

The organization was advised to contact other banks to try to exchange damaged banknotes.
