A few dozen participants who gathered for the rally in Cathedral Square marched through the streets of Vilnius with historical flags to the Belarusian memorial, where the memory of the fallen compatriots who fought against the regime will be honored.
Earlier on Friday morning, Sviatlana Cichanouskaya, the leader of the opposition in Belarus, said that with the upcoming presidential elections in Belarus next year, she is ready to mobilize Belarusians fighting against the repressive regime of A. Lukashenka.
“A lot of work is going on behind the scenes, so we will try to use this event to our advantage – we will have a big media campaign and try to mobilize people for the fight,” she emphasized to LRT radio.
ELTA reminds that A. Lukashenka won the presidential elections in Belarus four years ago.
After the announcement of the results of the official voter poll confirming the victory of A. Lukashenka over the representative of the opposition Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, there were protests all over the country, condemning the election and calling it rigged.
Police used stun grenades, tear gas and rubber bullets against the protesters. About 3,000 people were arrested during the protests.
