The practice is being spearheaded by Dr. Inès Balacco, who currently operates out of Dasle.”I wanted to get closer to the Territoire de Belfort, as my family is in Méziré,” Dr. Balacco explained, adding that the local mayor was keen about the project and facilitated access to land.
The new building, a substantial 200 square meter structure spanning three levels, reflects Dr. Balacco’s ambitious vision.While initially only the ground floor will house four treatment rooms, the design allows for future expansion. “I won’t use them all at first, but some friends…found, after five years, that it was no longer suitable,” Dr. Balacco noted, anticipating potential growth and the addition of specialists. Plans are already underway to perhaps welcome an orthodontist as early as 2027, and the space is designed to accommodate a second general dentist in the future. The total investment in the project is estimated at one million euros.
A Community Welcomes new Healthcare Options
The arrival of the dental office is being hailed as a major asset for Bourogne, particularly given its relatively young population. According to local official Baptiste Guardia,families prioritize access to essential services like schools and medical care when choosing where to settle. “The arrival of new doctors benefits everyone,but especially the elderly who have difficulty traveling,” Guardia stated. Dr. Balacco confirmed that the practice is currently accepting new patients, and will continue to serve existing patients from Dasle, which is approximately twenty minutes away.
Pharmacy and Additional Services to Follow
Further bolstering healthcare infrastructure, a new pharmacy is planned near the town’s industrial zone, replacing a disused tennis court that has been vacant for three decades. This project is privately led by a local pharmacist, with the building also incorporating space for a psychologist’s office and a mini-market. “The more activity there is in the community, the better it is indeed for everyone!” Dr. Balacco remarked, highlighting the synergistic benefits of integrated healthcare and commercial services.
While the land is owned by the municipality, the financial burden of the pharmacy project falls on the private sector. Local officials acknowledge the meaningful costs involved, particularly as the town is concurrently undertaking renovations to its school and canteen facilities.
The Challenge of Attracting General Practitioners
Despite the positive momentum, Bourogne faces a continuing challenge in attracting general practitioners. The municipality has actively advertised and posted signage seeking doctors, but has yet to secure any commitments. “there is a bidding war between the municipalities, to attract doctors, by offering premises or even a salaried position,” a local spokesperson explained, noting that Bourogne’s limited financial resources hinder its ability to compete.
