A decision taken without referring to the League
“Despite elaborate security measures, the Clasico ended in violent clashes and significant material damage,” justified the Brussels and Liège managements who “want to send a strong signal”: “violence has no place place in and around a football stadium. Following Thursday’s incidents, the Belgian Federation could sanction the two clubs, who both risk matches behind closed doors.
This decision was taken after consultation between the two clubs, without going through the Pro League (the Belgian league) and the federation. It was then communicated to both authorities. This season, three matches have already been played between the two clubs. Two others could take place if Brussels and Liégeois find themselves in the same group during the playoffs played at the end of the season. Note that the championship match between the two teams, this Sunday in Brussels, has already been played without Standard de Liège supporters.
