At least 85 graves were desecrated in the Jewish section of a cemetery in Charleroi, southern Belgium, while bronze objects and stars of David were stolen, in an “anti-Semitic act” that Belgian authorities condemned today.

The desecration of the graves became known yesterday, Wednesday, while it is estimated that it had taken place the night before.

Only the Jewish section of the cemetery was affected, an indication of the anti-Semitic nature of the vandalism, according to initial investigation data.

Complaints of anti-Semitic statements and actions have increased in Belgium since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas on October 7, with Belgian police authorities now on alert for possible attacks on schools and places of worship of the Jewish community.

“Anti-Semitism is an evil that we must continue to fight with all our strength,” Charleroi mayor Paul Maniet said today.
