Belgian government shaken by ‘Pipigate’. The Justice Minister, Vincent Van Quickenborne, appeared in front of Parliament yesterday after some guests at his 50th birthday party were caught on CCTV while urinating on a police van. The episode dates back to August 14th, but the facts emerged – in the Belgian press – only a few days ago.

For his part, Van Quickenborne apologized for what happened, but during the hearing he stated that he did not know what had happened at the party, once again denying any involvement and rejecting the interpretation of the images from the internal cameras with respect to his role in the affair: the video which portrays him amused while he seems to pretend to urinate, he explained, would be nothing more than the reprise of an “air guitar solo”. “I hate to admit it – he declared before the Justice Commission of the Belgian Parliament, as reported by the Flemish Het Nieuwsblad – but that is a specialty of mine, I am a metalhead”, he justified himself.

And while the opposition calls for his head, the minister wanted to clarify: “I am ashamed that the people I invited to my house peed against a police van. It is disgusting, especially considering the reason why the van was there,” after Van Quickenborne and his family were placed under police protection following a failed kidnapping attempt last year.
