Bella Thorne to Write, Direct, and Star in Spring Breakers 2

Bella Thorne has taken over as the writer and director of Spring Breakers 2, the sequel to the 2012 cult hit. Thorne announced the expanded role during a recent appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast, confirming she will also star in the project after impressing producers with her directorial debut.

The shift in creative leadership marks a significant pivot for the long-awaited follow-up. When the sequel was first announced in May 2025, filmmaker Matthew Bright was attached to direct. Now, Thorne has stepped into the director’s chair, taking creative control of the long awaited follow up.

From Color Your Hurt to the Director’s Chair

Thorne’s ascent to the director’s seat was triggered by the producers’ reaction to her first feature film. According to The Express Tribune, the producers viewed an early cut of Thorne’s directorial debut, Color Your Hurt, a coming-of-age thriller centered on a young gay man seeking acceptance in a hostile community. Production on that independent feature wrapped in October.

“The producers watched Color Your Hurt, which is the movie that I just wrapped, an early cut of it. And they asked me to write something to see if they would like it. And they loved it! And now I’m writing and directing Spring Breakers 2.”

While this is Thorne’s first major studio-backed feature, she is not entirely new to the lens. Av Club reports that she has directed several music videos and received two Adult Video New Awards nominations for a 2020 short titled Her & Him.

The Tone of ‘Litness’ and Casting Updates

Thorne is positioning the sequel as a departure from the 2012 original, though she promises to maintain the chaotic energy associated with the franchise. She has repeatedly described the upcoming film as crazy and filled with litness.

“I don’t want to get in trouble, but what I can say is it is so litty, litty McTitties. From start to finish, it’s lit as fuck. We are having fun.”

The cast for the sequel includes Grace Van Dien, Ariel Martin, and True Whitaker. While Thorne remained silent when pressed by nerdbot about whether original cast members would return, the production does retain some of the original team. Producers Chris Hanley and Jordan Gertner remain attached to the project.

A Legacy of Exploitation and Creative Conflict

Reflecting on the era of the first film, Thorne noted that 2012 was such an exploitative time for young female stars. She recalled how she, Miley Cyrus, Zendaya, and Selena Gomez were constantly compared by the media to determine who would become the next bad girl of the industry.

This desire for a new direction aligns with the absence of the original director. Harmony Korine, who wrote and directed the first film, has expressed no interest in returning. Korine has stated that the first movie already exists as its own entity and that the thought of being involved in a sequel would not even enter his mind.

The project’s path to production has been fraught with false starts over the last decade. Av Club notes that a version titled Spring Breakers: The Second Coming was announced in 2014, written by Irvine Welsh and directed by Jonas Åkerlund, but it never materialized after James Franco criticized it as an attempt to capitalize on someone else’s creativity.

The Stakes for Salvation Mountain

The current iteration of the film has been referred to as Spring Breakers: Salvation Mountain. The plot is expected to explore a group of girls attempting to outrun the chaos they created after a spring break trip spirals out of control.

By taking over the writing and directing, Thorne is attempting to transform the sequel from a corporate exercise into a personal creative project. This transition is particularly pointed given that the original creator, Korine, has explicitly poo-pooed the idea of a follow-up. Thorne’s success now depends on whether her brand of litness can resonate with a new generation of viewers while distancing the film from the shadow of its predecessor.

At this time, Spring Breakers 2 has no set release window, leaving the industry to wonder if Thorne’s total creative control will finally push the project past the development hell that claimed its previous versions.
