Belo Horizonte’s Carnival celebrations are underway, but a significant number of planned street performances will not take place. Approximately one in four registered blocos – neighborhood-based carnival groups – have canceled their participation in the festivities, leaving 499 of the initial 667 scheduled parades confirmed as of today, Saturday, February 14, 2026. This means that 75% of the registered blocos will be bringing music and revelry to the streets of Belo Horizonte this year.
The information was shared by Coronel Amanda Cristina Miranda, commander of the 1st Operational Command of the Minas Gerais Military Fire Department (CBMMG). According to the official, the cancellations stem from various unforeseen circumstances, but organizers were in contact with all 617 groups planning multiple performances to ensure adequate safety measures were in place. “The remaining cancellations occurred, but in any case, there were 617 blocos that would perform at different times, and all were contacted in meetings, inspections, and with the support of the entire workforce, as no one is on vacation to assist with security,” she stated.
Despite the cancellations, the Carnival spirit remains strong. Today marks the official start of the Carnival in Belo Horizonte, with 68 blocos scheduled to perform across the city’s regions. Still, 29 of those performances have already been called off. The festivities kicked off this morning with the “Então, Brilha!” bloco, themed “Technology of Delirium,” drawing an estimated crowd of over 200,000 people, according to the Belo Horizonte City Hall.
Belo Horizonte Mayor Álvaro Damião (União Brasil) has too taken a firm stance against unsanctioned blocos, emphasizing that they do not receive city support. He specifically condemned one group for displaying intolerance, stating that it will be barred from future accreditation. “There was even a bloco that practiced religious intolerance and has no relation to our carnival. As long as I am mayor, this bloco will not be able to register, as it attacked a church. We always take every precaution so that the carnival is even for those who do not like carnival. No bathrooms near churches, with all care and tolerance,” the mayor said.

Concerns Over Unsanctioned Blocos and Intolerance
The Mayor’s comments highlight a broader effort to maintain order and inclusivity during the Carnival celebrations. The city is actively working to prevent the emergence of unauthorized blocos, which often lack the necessary safety permits and can disrupt public order. The incident involving the bloco accused of religious intolerance underscores the city’s commitment to ensuring a welcoming environment for all, even those who do not actively participate in the festivities.
Safety Measures and Fire Department Support
The CBMMG is playing a crucial role in ensuring the safety of Carnival participants. Coronel Miranda confirmed that the entire department is fully mobilized, with no personnel on vacation, to provide support and security throughout the celebrations. This commitment reflects the city’s proactive approach to managing the large crowds and potential risks associated with Carnival.
