In conjunction with The Easter ones holidays, the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BABH) performed 4046 enhanced checks outside the current official control in food production and trade facilities, egg packing centers, food wholesale warehouses, catering establishments and retail outlets, markets and exchanges throughout the country, for the period from 27.03. 2023 until 17.04.2023 inclusive.

Part of the inspections were carried out with representatives of the regional subdivisions of the CCP, the Ministry of the Interior and the National Revenue Agency. During the inspections, some inconsistencies were found, for which 24 acts of administrative violation and 137 prescriptions were issued.

1,406 kg of food of animal origin were confiscated and directed for destruction, due to the lack of a label in Bulgarian, with an expired expiration date, without information on the label about origin and expiration date, without accompanying documents; 60 eggs with an expired shelf life and 200 liters of raw milk of unclear origin. Also 23.8 kg of foods of non-animal origin and 23.38 l of fruit juices without a label in Bulgarian, with an expired expiration date.

36 eggs have been suspended from sale and are being sent to the supplier for re-labelling, due to lack of information on grade and producer code.

5 sites in Varna, Vratsa, Kyustendil and Sofia were temporarily closed, with the violations being poor hygienic condition of the site, performing unregulated activities and performing activities in unregistered sites.

The case of lambs from North Macedonia

On 11.04.2023, during a joint inspection with the Ministry of Agriculture and the National Revenue Agency of a meat production and meat processing enterprise in the Kardzhali region, it was found that there was no evidence of effective traceability in the distribution of the meat and the presentation of misleading information about its origin. During the inspection, 32,092 kg of frozen lamb carcass meat from North Macedonia was found to be available at the facility. It was placed under ban and samples were taken for microbiological examination and proof of compliance and safety with subsequent referral for processing. The results show no discrepancies. The business operator was handed a prescription and two acts, and an order to stop the import and distribution of meat from small ruminants from third countries.
