LONDON: Newcomer England Test captain Ben Stokes has scored a record 17 sixes for Durham against Worcestershire on the second day of the County Championship. Durham declared their innings at 580/6 on the strength of Stotox’s batting prowess, with Stotocos hitting 161 (88 balls). In reply, Worcestershire were 169/6.

Stokes broke Australia’s Andrew Symonds’ (1995) and England’s Graham Napier (2011) record 16 sixes for Gloucestershire and Essex, respectively.

Stokes scored 34 runs in an over by Josh Baker. Stokes hit five sixes and a four in the over. Among those who witnessed the performance was legendary cricketer and Durham president Ian Botha.

With England set to begin their season with their first Test against New Zealand at Lord’s on June 2, Stokes’ disastrous form is a source of excitement for the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). England have won just one of their last 17 Tests. Therefore, English cricket is hoping to leapfrog Stokes in the new season.

It was Stokes’ first innings after England lost by 10 wickets to the West Indies in the third Test at Granada. When Durham resumed the innings at 339/3, Scott Borthwick scored 89. According to Durham Cricket, Stokes’ century came off 64 balls.

Stokes’ innings came to an end when Jack Haynes caught a mid-wicket boundary while trying to hit a six off Brett de Oliveira.

“It was good fun. I think our top five batsmen made the game go pretty well. I had to play according to the situation and say, “There are records you don’t know (17 sixes), and it comes automatically. It’s not right to aim for such records, “Stokes added.
